    Hear and Now: John Zorn 60th birthday concert

    Tonight's Hear and Now is

    a concert given earlier this evening in Glasgow by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra celebrating the 60th birthday of the American composer John Zorn, including the world premiere of a BBC Commission, Suppôts et Suppliciations.

    John Zorn: Suppôts et Suppliciations (BBC Commission, world premiere)
    John Zorn: Kol Nidre
    John Zorn: Aporias (Stephen Drury piano; members of the Choristers of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh)

    BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ilan Volkov.

    Thanks for drawling to the attention, Byas'd.

    Mr Zorn holds great store by his own genius, I think. Sometimes if by no means always borne out, imho. Masada was good though.

      I think one needs encyclopaedic ears for this composer - difficult to get around the breadth of styles of music.

      No wonder people get Ph.D.s for studying this composer!

        a shame that john zorn was 'too ill' (apparently) to make it, but i really enjoyed the 'zornathon' .. though hadn't noticed this thread.

        it's just as well that zorn considers himself with such high esteem, as it means that he can work with other 'eclecticists', and talented ego maniacs, one of which is mr bungle, aka mike patton, and via this route presumably zorn gains a whole new contemporary audience?

        in retrospect, the piece about zorn's jewish heritage, and masada, stand out in my memory of the whole 'hear & now' concert.

        i hope there's nothing seriously wrong with zorn..... how ill's 'too ill' i wondered. hopefully it was just a bad cold virus ...or something very temporary.
