    BBC SSO: Cage at 100

Another "this concert will be recorded for future broadcast" on Hear and Now event. No word of when it's scheduled to be broadcast.

    John Cage
    • Concerto for Prepared Piano
    • Atlas Eclipticalis with Winter Music
    • But what about the noise...
    • Ear for Ear
    • Improvisation III
    • Child of Tree

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ilan Volkov, with John Tilbury (piano) and guest improvisers
Glasgow City Halls, Saturday 28th July at 7.30pm.

Anyone got any thoughts on any of these works?

Well I am glad this 'rehearsal' for the Prom on August 17th is also eventually to be broadcast. Tilbury and Volkov did the Concerto for Prepared Piano and orchestra with the latter's Iceland orchestra earlier this year, and a particularly fine performance it was. The "guest improvisers" include many of the leading luminaries of that field. I really wish I could have made it to Glasgow for this event, but it was not to be.

Unfortunately I've got something else arranged for that night, so I won't make it either. I'd be curious to hear it. I've not heard much Cage, and have very mixed feelings about what I have heard.

by the way did anyone go to the Cage performance at the Proms in the end?

I went, and enjoyed, I'm interested what other's feedback would be.

Coming up Saturday 1st September, Radio 4 - for which reason I wasn't sure whether or not this deserved a separate thread: but why Radio 4????

8.00 Archive on Four: John Cage - Composing Controversy

To celebrate the centenary of John Cage's birth, English composer and protege Gavin Bryars explores archive performances by one of the 20th century's most controversial musicians to find out what lay behind his artistic personality and how the reception of his work and ideas has changed. With contributions from Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, composer Brian Eno, dancer Carolyn Brown and comedian Stewart Lee

Archive on 4 (formerly The Archive Hour) is a long-running R4 feature (one of the best things on the Radio IMO): they occasionally "do" items on figures from the "Classical" Music worlds - there was a programme on Karajan in 2008 (another centenary).
