Where the Apple Mac analogy falls down for me is that that (or any) Mac is one of any number of tools that do indistinguishably similar things.
Indeed, as long ago as the early 1970s, the fact that someone like Tony Oxley cited similar reasons as to why he was devising his own electronic extensions to the standard jazz drum kit serves rather well to illustrate the very point you are making, CR.
