Cosmic Pulses to Mullova - all here for Nout

    Sat 18 July
    10pm - New Music Show

Tom Service presents music ranging from the sound of a single clarinet to the combination of modern symphony and electronics as heard at last October's Donaueschingen Music Days in Germany. Tom visits the night in 2008 when Karlheinz Stockhausen's Cosmic Pulses left the audience bewildered*.

    Gérard Grisey - Nout

    11pm - Proms Premieres

    Stockhausen - Cosmic Pulses

    Misha-Mullov-Abbado - The Linden Tree

Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington, arr. Buls - Chelsea Bridge

Not in my case, I can assure you. I was as usual bewildered as to why the RAH is ever used as a music venue though.

This programme a mixed bag, fine by me (attempting to ignore TS's loquaciousness).

If it didn't have Stockhausen's name attached, would Cosmic Pulses have stood out from the crowd? Not IMHO.

The Clarinet virtuosic piece. Again IMHO, you can have too much of a good thing.....

The stand out item for me was Chelsea Bridge / Strayhorn. First time I really appreciated that composition.
