The 42nd Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is moving towards its final weekend of events, and R3 begins its four-week series of highlights from the Festival with a Live "mixtape", broadcast from the freezing wastes of Bates Motel. Featured are:

Two improvised sets by Saxophonist Evan Parker (b1944) with a quartet from his regular collaborators, the Electroacoustic Ensemble.

Three Sound Poems by French Artist, Isidore Isou (1925-2007), performed by Lore Lixenberg.

Hanna Hartman(b1961)'s Horizontal Cracking in Concrete Pavements for two Saxophones & electronics, played by Anthony Brown, Carl Raven, & the Composer.

Two pieces by Frank Denyer(b1943): Woman, Viola & Crow, a song for viola player, performed by Elisabeth Smalt, and Frog, for bowed strings.

And Morton Feldman(1926-87)'s Extensions 3 and Intersection 3 played by pianist Philip Thomas.

Someone must have had a quiet word in Kate's ear. The musicians and music were largely allowed to speak for themselves. Can we hope this will be an ongoing situation?

There's another one coming up tonight, with a 12-piece band which will be playing a single continuous set of 90 minutes. I am presently entering a meditative state in my hotel room in preparation for this.

I am presently bouncing off the walls as the adrenaline skateboards around my veins & arteries in response to this quite mind-bogglingly brilliant performance.

Whoop-whoop wow - further comment to follow as soon as something like coherence returns - but it was tremendous! Many thanks, Richard, to all concerned.
