New Music Biennial, 2019; NMS, Sat 6/7/2019; 10:00pm

Kate Molleson presents the first of two (?I think?) programmes of works performed "in a range of venues" this very weekend at the South Bank Centre.

I cannot recall ever hearing any of the performers before, so it will all be very interesting for me.

Claire M Singer: Gleann Ciùin London Contemporary Orchestra/Robert Ames

Forest Swords (aka Matthew Barnes): Trespassing, Immix Ensemble

Arun Ghosh: AMBHAS for large wind orchestra and clarinet solo

Gazelle Twin (Elizabeth Bernholz) & Max de Wardener: The Power and the Glory, Gazelle Twin (vocal) with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

From her descriptions I'm probably over-anticipating something like Ligeti's Volumina.

Closer to, though still very different from, the techniques employed by Cardew in the organ parts of Paragraphs 1 and 4 of The Great Learning. I think it a delightful irony that she is playing the organ used for the performance of Paragaph 1 at Cardew's Memorial Concert on 1982, and that her work with the organ at Union Chapel conicided with the 2015 complete perfromance of Cardew's magnum opus. Fortunately, both those organs lend themselves to the techniques used, unlike so many where electrical and electronic controls undermine the gradual engagement of stops.
