Hmm. I have recordings by David Tudor, Frank Zappa, the BBCSO, Amadinda and Gianni-Emilio Simonetti. I don't feel the need to get the new Mode release, though if it turns up on QOBUZ, I might stream it.

Some years ago, Radio 3 listeners were invited to request that the station play 4'33'' in return for a pledge to Children In Need (or was it Red Nose Day?) Among the more or less predictable consequences were complaints that: (i) it was being played at the wrong speed; (ii) it was being played backwards; and (iii) it was being played simultaneously on two or more turntables.

          .

... the best performances are always 'live', rather than 'as live' or 'recorded', let alone 'studio recordings'.

I recall it being claimed, some years ago, that a complete broadcast of a truly silent performance of the work would not be possible since the transmitters have an automatic fail-safe system which cuts in to terminate transmission after a somewhat shorter time without signal to transmit. I wonder if anyone here can confirm to deny that claim?

Did anyone complain that it was played too loud?

Assuming that there is scope for artistic interpretation, are there record fast and slow times for a performance of this work?

I remember that something of that kind was mentioned at a Proms broadcast when the Piano lift got stuck, and the announcer had to do a very long ad lib. Somebody asked (in Radio Times, perhaps) why he had to talk at all, and this "automatic shut-down after x minutes of silence" was the given reason.

Last time we were in New York we visited the Juilliard Shop. (Amazing to think of the stars of the future buying their music there!). The music for 4' 33" was on the shelf. I NEARLY bought it but soon realised that it was outwith my technical/musical abilities!

You cannot get more HIPP than this:

Maybe an indelicate question but has a performance ever included breaking wind?

Given the nerve-wracking nature of public performance, this is bound to have happened at some stage. Only accepted as part of the performance by those close enough to actually hear any resulting sound, of course.

Unusually for a former secondary modern, my school had an old pipe organ in the main hall. This gathered dust for most of my time there but finally the cash was found to get it working again. The inaugural piece at assembly was 4'33'', a world premier of the arrangement for the instrument we were solemnly told. This was the mid-70s, so might even have been true. I recall it was played in 3 parts with different registrations for each.
