    I Predict a Riot; H&N, Sat, 13/10/18; 10:00pm

Recorded at Kings Place (without the queueing for refreshements) last month, Kate Molleson presents a concert given by the Riot Ensemble.

Lee Hyla (1952 - 2014): We Speak Etruscan (1992) for Bass Clarinet & Baritone Saxophone
Helga Arias Parra (b1984): Incipit (2015) for "Pierrot Ensemble" (Flute, Clarinet, Piano, Voice, Violin & 'cello)
Sarah Nemtsov (The Beeb's website spells her name incorrectly)(b 1980): Central ParkManhattan or Landzunge / New Jersey (2011) for Piano (dbl Melodica), piccolo, viola, & percussion
Philip Venables (b1979): Nos 91 - 95 for flute, harp, Low Woodblock (optional), & speaking voice (who also operates two tape recorders); settings of poems by the late and much-missed Simon Howard (Forumista, John Skelton).

Venables' Illusions was also played in that concert, but this isn't mentioned on the Beeb website; instead (or, very possibly, "as well") a performance by the Goeyvaerts Trio of Klang for String Trio and Ring Modulator by Wolfgang von Schweinitz is included in a recording from The Book of Hours Festival in Co Louth. (I think that this is the same work as Plainsound String Trio KLANG auf Schön Berg La Monte YoungStimmübung im Lobgesang from 1999-2000 - if so, with the composer's estimated duration of 45 - 60 minutes, it will take up the bulk of the programme.)

Parra's haunting and elusive Incipit, dedicated to the Riot Ensemble is available, performed by the dedicatees on YouTube:

Oh! The same performance is also available (without score) on the Riot Ensemble website, along with comments from the performers about how they set about preparing new works, both as individuals and collectively:

The Riot Ensemble website is a real find: a TARDIS of fascinating information and discoveries. There's also this interview with Parra:

Excellent, thanks for that Ferney. Sometimes there don’t seem to be enough hours in the day.
And then you check, and there are 24 as usual.

Anyway, are you going to preorder their new CD ?

                Lols.

Got to love emojis. I was able to whatsapp Mrs TS an almost complete set of emojis describing my lunch yesterday. Sadly there didn’t seem to be one for a bag of crisps.

As I seem to have been having more or less the same lunch for about 35 years, I think she joined up the smiley dots on that.
It was a Riot, feebly struggling to get back on topic......

That sent me lin search of Simon's Numbers (which I somehow deduced was the source of the words set by Venables . Or Venable, as the BBC would have it (Venable's numbers 91-95). Very Simonish

Please tell me the large photo is of Helga Arias Parra … no. It's the presenter, isn't it?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

And if anyone is interested in the poems, Numbers seems to be still available, price £5.

The Forum is a sadder place without Simon's gentle, wise, and witty contributions.
