    Sara Mohr-Pietsch (good to see her back on H&N following her maternity leave ) presents the second Open Ear concert of "cutting edge" Music. The advertised concert on the Beeb website https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0000h93 is

    William Marsey (b 1989): a selection from Dutch Interior Subjects

    ... and, according to his Twitter account, Oliver Leith also believes that his work is being done next week (mind you, he says "Sat 30th", which gives a new meaning for "twitter").

    There was a previous Open Ear event at LSO St Luke's back in April, bit details for that aren't available (other than that SM-P "presented" the event):


    ... so, "anything can happen in the next two hours" to paraphrase Jeff Tracy!

    Eh? I attended an Open Ear concert at which the works in this programme were performed and recorded (including a retake), 30th June. this summer. It was a very short notice invitation. I received the following in a email on 25th June:

    As someone who has previously applied to be in the audience of Radio 3's Open Ear we wanted to give you a special opportunity to join us at a very short notice recording taking place this Saturday.

    At this stage tickets are only being made available to those who have expressed an interest in attending these recordings in the past.

    Sara Mohr-Pietsch hosts a concert of cutting-edge new ‎music in the round, with performances from two ‎ensembles: The Hermes Experiment and Apartment ‎House, plus two soloists: pianist Joseph Havlat, and cellist ‎Severine Ballon.
    I will also be attending next week's.

    [As an afterthought, SM-P presented from in front of the stage during the concert, so she may not actually be back from maternity leave yet.]

      Thanks - that (and the eMail you quote) clears things up. If I'd looked more carefully at Oliver Leith's twitter post, I'd've seen that he posted it in June, so "next Saturday, 30th" was exactly right, and I was the twitterest.

        Heh, heh. By the way, expect some sort of mention of All the Dust, all three luminaries having been in attendance.

          I was interested in listening to the new releases from All that Dust. I was a bit surprised to find them on Apple Music. i wouldn’t have thought that it was really in their interest , at this stage of development, to have them available for streaming, when their market is clearly very niche.
          Maybe part of a wider distribution agreement that they couldn’t alter ?
          Be interested in your thoughts , Bryn.
          Or anybody else who knows about these kind of arrangements.

            I'll start with the Severine Ballon. You will have heard some of it on Hear and Now recently and, of course, you will hear her tonight. I found the whole disc held my attention. I won't offer a blow by blow account. I will just say it was my favourite of the three disc. I have known Matthew Schlomowitz's work for at least a couple of decades, so it held no great surprises for me. in some ways it share terrtiory with the Live Batts! I mentioned in the "What are you listening to now" thread, but for me it lacks the much of the edge and humour of the latter, but that's just me.

            Now for the Feldman. It will come as no surprise that this was the disc I most wanted to hear. It's a fine performance, well recorded, and if you, like me, are eager to hear a range of approaches to the work, I would definitely place it among the most desireable available on disc. However, if you want but one recording, then I would advise you await the release of Darragh Morgan and John Tilbury's forthcoming release of the studio recording they are making at City University. 12 years on from their superb HCMF concert recording released on a Matchless Recordings audio DVD, they have performed the work together many times, most recently, I think, at Kings Place, earlier this year. That performance was at a somewhat qucker tempo than the HCMF one, but still much slower than most, including the earliest recording, with Darragh's mentor, Paul Zukofsky, and Marianne Schroeder. Darragh has tended to use a baroque bow when performing the work in order to observe more subtly the low dynamics called for. John's fine gradations of low dynamics on the piano, are legendary.

              Thanks for all of your comment Bryn. I’ll need more time to comment on your comment ,(!!) but the Orazbayeva and Knoop recording of the Feldman work sounds very promising so far .But I need to try to hear the whole thing .....

                Another very fine Open Ear concert at LSO St Luke's tonight. Music by Mette Nielsen, Betsy Jolas, David Fernnessy, Liza Lim, Jennifer Walshe, Larry Goves, Natasha Anderson, Oliver Leith, Amber Priestley and BirdWorld. More when I can type on a computer, rather than this 'handy'.

                        The recording referred to has now been released, at least I picked up a copy at last night's AMM - Formanex event at Cafe OTO. John Tilbury's son Jasper delivered a batch just before the start of the AMM set. It's beautifully recorded and reflects the performers' further thoughts on and experience in performing it many times since their 'live' HCMF one on a Matchless Recordings audio DVD. The tempo is a little faster this time (83'59" as against 89'01"). Unfortunately, it does not appear to be available on general release as yet (the publication year is given as 2020). It's on the Dublin based Diatribe Label. The catalogue number is DIACD025. Their website is at www.diatribe.ie but that has not as yet been updated to include this new CD. One slightly strange feature is the lack of any programme notes.

                        [Ah. I am advised that the official release date is next February and that programme notes with be available online at that time.]
