A concert recorded tonight (Thurs 21st June) in the Britten Studio of the Snape Maltings Concert Hall as part of the 2018 Aldeburgh Festival. Members of the Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Tito Muñoz are joined by American pianist/composer Michael Hersch (b1971) in a selection of his works, culminating in the European Premiere of his I hope we get the chance to visit soon, which was partly commissioned by the Festival. Before it are selections from two of Hersch's works for solo instruments - sections I and VII of of ages manifest (2011) for unaccompanied Alto Saxophone, and a twenty-minute selection of pieces from the massive "song cycle without singer", The Vanishing Pavillions - a two-and-a-half hour collection of 50 pieces, spread over two books. The two sections of the Saxophone piece "bookend" the piano selection in the original concert presentation - which might also be the case in the broadcast, unless they have one of their "let's mess up the artists' programming decisions and have a bit of chat in between the pieces" ideas. Gary Louie is the solo saxophonist, and the composer plays his own piano work. Tom McKinney presents.
