    Ulster Orchestra; H&N, Sat 31/3/18; 10:30pm

A shorter programme this week - apparently, the Met takes four hours to get through Cosi fan Tutte!

Robert Worby introduces five orchestral works from composers based in Northern Ireland:

Brian Irvine(b 1965): Drowning in the Sea of Your Dreams
Greg Caffrey(b 1963): Environments 1 for Piano and Orchestra (Finghin Collins, piano)
    Patrick Brennan(b1985): Cycling
    Elaine Agnew(b1967): Make a Wish
    Ed Bennett(b 1975): Psychedelia

The recording was made at a concert in the Waterfront Hall (or, possibly the Ulster Hall: the orchestra's website is ambiguous) on 16th January, in which the Ulster Orchestra was conducted by David Brophy (although the H&N website seems unaware of this). Finghin Collins is the piano soloist in Caffrey's work.

I don't know any of these composers' works, so I shall be listening hopefully.

And there's also Ton de Leeuw(1926-96)'s Mountains for bass clarinet and pre-recorded electronics, played by Chris Cundy.

Robert Worby introduces a recent performance by the Ulster Orchestra.

Fascinating that 1977 saw two works for Bass Clarinet commisioned by Harry Sparnaay, each with the title "Mountains", that to be heard tonight by Ton de Leeuw and the rather different work by Cardew. Both are in Chris Cundy's repertoire, and performances of them by him may be found on YouTube.
