Concluding R3's day commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the death of Debussy (a day early: he died on 25th March) Kate Molleson presents a programme of works by composers who have acknowledged the continuing influence of the French master.
From a BCMG concert given last week; Pierre Boulez(1925-2016)'s 1984 work Derive 1, and three works by Tristan Murail (b1947): Treize couleurs du soleil couchant (="thirteen colours of the setting sun") from 1978; Feuilles à travers les cloches (="leaves across the bells" - a specific inversion of Debussy's Bells Through Leaves) from 1998; and the early (1969)Couleur de mer (="wine"). All four works conducted by Julian Leroy.
The rest of the programme is devoted to orchestral works, two by Linda Catlin Smith(b1957) - Adagietto from 2014, performed by the BBCSSO conducted by Illan Volkov; and Memory Forms, from 1995 performed by the CBC Vancouver Orchestra conducted by Owen Underhill - and a recording of another work by Murail, Le partage des eaux (="the sharing of waters" [probably "parting waters" is better - it's based on the computer analysis of sounds of water breaking) also from 1995. Herre the BBCSO is conducted by Pierre-Andre Valade.
