Ensemble Modern; MaerzMusik Festival. H&N, Sat 2/9/17; 10:00pm

Re-Inventing Walter Smetak is the strange heading on the H&N website ("strange" because there doesn't seem to be any of his Music being broadcast): a concert of works performed last March at the MaerzMusik Sonic Arts Festival. Four works by contemporary composers in tribute to the work of the Swiss/Czech-Brazillian composer (1913-84) whose career has parallels with that of his close contemporary, Harry Partch. Smetak (a sculptor as well as a Musician) created many of his own Musical Instruments which he called "plasticas sonoras"; some of these are used in the new works.

    Arthur Kampela (b1960): ...tak-tak...tak...
for ensemble and plásticas sonoras (2017)

Liza Lim (b1967): Ronda - The Spinning World
for ensemble and plásticas sonoras (2017)

    Daniel Moreira (b1984): Instrumentarium
    for ensemble and video (2017)

    Paulo Rios Filho (b1985): volvere
for ensemble with plásticas sonoras (2017)

The Ensemble Modern is conducted by Vimbayi Kaziboni.

Also in the programme, works by Kate Moore and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe:

    Kate Moore (b 1979): Ferney
    for chamber ensemble & electroacoustics

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (b 1975): Levitation Praxis Pt 4

Kate Molleson unearths the unique instruments of maverick composer Walter Smetak.

      Don't you geliebe it!!

Am I alone in never previously having heard of Walter Smetak? And why is none of his music featured in this programme - or will it be just excerpts?
