    Techtonics Festival, Glasgow 2017; H&N, Sat 20/5/17; 10:00pm

Australian Jazz trio The Necks, and Piano/Percussion Quartet yarn/wire join the BBC Scottish SO conducted by Ilan Volkov for the first of three programmes recorded at this year's Tectonics Festival held in Glasgow earlier this month.

Included in this first programme are works by American Linda Catlin Smith(b1957)'s Widerness (2005) , Frenchman Francoise-Bernard Mache(b1935)'s Kassandra (1977), and American Andrew McIntosh's Hyenas in the Temples of Pleasure (2012). A solo improvization by Saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell (b1940) and a joint improvization by the Orchestra and The Necks complete the programme.

Very good! Kassandra is quite an amazing piece (as is much of Mâche's output), and Roscoe Mitchell's solo work is also incomparable.

    What is "improvization"?

No relation to Phil Dadson, I presume.

            No

            Shiori usui from scratch score

But I think this was always rather good and they did some great stuff in a very particular way

From Scratch (1980) Geoff Chapple, Phil Dadson, Wayne Laird, Don McGlashan. (www.sonicsfromscratch.co.nz) Gung Ho means 'work together" and takes it's title ...

Selections of her work (including an excerpt form Wilderness) can be heard on Soundcloud:

I compose concert music including solo works, chamber music and orchestral pieces.

... and I've been enjoying this CD since last November:

another timbre is a new label for improvised and contemporary music

Francois-Bernard Mache used to feature "quite" regularly on H&N, but I don't remember hearing anything of his for some years now. I'm glad Volkov chose to programme at least one of his works.

Re: LCS, I’ve listened to the album 'Memory Forms' on AppleMusic, which contains some of the pieces in your link.

Re: Mache, I know nothing, so I look forward breaking my duck this Saturday (I don’t think there’s anything on my telly this Saturday night, not even MOTD ).

No - that was Guillaume the Machaut.
