    Monteverdi & Gesualdo; Hear & Now; Sat 13/5/17; 10:00pm

A programme exploring the connections between the Avant-Gardes of the 17th and 20th & 21st Century composers; and certainly both Monteverdi and Gesualdo produced much more "contemporary" Music than quite a lot of the works broadcast in the last two or three editions of H&N. A shame (in both usages of the word) that only "excerpts" from Sciarrino's (b1947) 12 Madrigali are being performed - I presume that means that a "selection" of complete Madrigals will be performed, rather than fragments of all 12? - the entire set lasts less than 40minutes! "Excerpts" only, too, from Finnissy's (b1946) workings of Gesualdo's Sixth Book of Madrigals. The focus is on the World Premiere of James Weeks' (b 1978) Libro di fiammelle e ombre ("A Book of Flames and Shadows"). Luigi Nono's (1924 - 90 - my stars!!! nearly 30 year ago!) sarà dolce tacere ("there will be sweet silence") from 1960 completes the main part of the programme, performed by chamber choir EXAUDI, conducted by Weeks himself - the choir's co-founder and director.

AND, a week after what would have been her 80th birthday, a tribute to Delia Derbyshire (who should be on a bank note or something) including a discussion between Sara Mohr-Pietsche and Jo Langton, and broadcasts of (?excerpts from?) three of her works, including the wittily-entitled Delian Mode

Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores Monteverdi's influence on contemporary music with James Weeks.

I shall definitely be listening to this. Exaudi is one of the few professional groups specialising in 'difficult' contemporary music. The BBC recorded the programme at a live Wigmore Hall recital, though how much of it is being left out, I'm not sure. They have an ongoing relationship with Finnissy, BTW.

Edit: This was the rogramme from their April 1st Wigmore concert.
