Not Much Different from The 19th & 20th

This week's H&N has the title "The Twenty-First Century Orchestra", and with unspecified works by Deidre Gribbin (b 1967) and Kevin Volans (b1949), and a Violin Concerto by Ryan Molley (b1972) it seems that the Beeb thinks it's business as usual. I wonder if there's any chance they might be able to borrow material from SWR2? (They might feel comforted by a work with "nothing has changed" in the title? ) The UK premiere of a(nother unspecified) work by Olga Neuwirth (b 1968) completes this section of the programme, in which the BBCSSO is conducted by Matthias Pintscher.

It's not all disappointingly "Prom-ish": Terry Riley (b 1935) and David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet discuss their working relationship - and, three weeks after the event, there is an unspecified "70th birthday tribute" to the great Salvatore Sciarrino (b 4/4/1947*). Yes indeedy - John Adams isn't the only 70th birthday boy this year; sad the Proms didn't notice this.

Tom Service presents 21st-century orchestral music including a Ryan Molloy world premiere.

(* - to clarify for our American readers: that's "4th of April", not "April 4th".)
