I am not quite sure of the exact nature of the Awards - unlike the Turner or Booker, no money seems to be involved, so are they more like the BAFTAs, with just a hot meal and a few speeches to endure (like at the Salvation Army). Is there even a perspex trophy?

Wha'evva - this year's awards do seem to suggest to me that the most exciting work being done in Britain's New Music is being done by women.

There is a lovely multi coloured trophy ( trophies)?
      looks just like this.

      And just to prove it.....http://www.britishcomposerawards.com/the_ceremony.php

      Marvellous.

If indeed the most interesting work is being done by women, it rather begs the question "why ? "

anyway, who doesn't love awards ceremonies? They are very popular with the creatives where I work......

I don't think that it is - it's just that none of the blokes doing stuff I like have been given awards (nor, apart from Birtwistle and Iddon, were even nominated) whereas four of the women doing stuff I like got tree decorations.

As a past "winner" I can confirm that no transfer of currency takes place. Nor in 2003 was there anything for the mantelpiece. A stipulation is that nominated works must have been premiered in the UK in the year previous to the award. This would account for the exclusion of certain parties who might otherwise be expected to appear.

As an unashamed philogynist, this is good news to me. May be females are finally being given total freedom in the traditional world of Classical Music.

On the international scene, we have Kaija Saarioha's opera performed at the Met earlier on Saturday, with mezzo singing androgynous role and female conductor. The composition of the orchestra was not disclosed. The baritone was the sole male performer.

Not sure about the Salvation Army reference - they're not known for awards ceremonies - but one thing you won't get there that you will at music industry awards is a booze-up.
