John Metcalf, the Artistic Director of the Gwyl Bro Morannwg since 2008 joins Ivan Hewett to introduce three pieces by Peteris Vasks recorded at this year's Festival: Cantabile for String orchestra; Sala, a "Symphonic Elegy" for orchestra; and the World Premiere of Vasks' Viola Concerto played by Maxim Rysanov. The BBCNOW play in all three works, conducted by Edwin Outwater. A rare (for this programme) opportunity to hear two works featured in the programme on youTube:
The H&N page on the i-Player site gives the usual fluff - "elegaic nostalgia", "dynamic and challenging" - but listening to these pieces makes me wonder what on earth it's doing in the late-night slot: there's nothing in this music (a sort of Arvo Part lite) to "challenge" even ClassicFM audiences, let alone mid-evening R3 schedules.
Ho-hum.
Better fare with the chat between Oliver Knussen and Claire Booth about the Knussen's Songs for Sue (his requiem for his wife)
- and Radelescu's 14minute second Piano Sonata, being and non-being create each other played by Stephen Clarke.
