Chester Cathedral

In 1844, an organ by Gray & Davison of London was installed in the cathedral, replacing an instrument with parts dating back to 1626, possibly by Father Smith. The organ was rebuilt and enlarged by Whiteley Bros. of Chester in 1876, to include harmonic flutes and reeds by Cavaillé-Coll. It was later moved to its present position at the front of the north transept. In 1910 William Hill and Son of London extensively rebuilt and revoiced the organ, replacing the Cavaillé-Coll reeds with new pipes of their own. The choir division of the organ was enlarged and moved behind the choirstalls on the south side. The instrument was again overhauled by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool in 1969, when a new mechanism and some new pipework made to a design by the organist, Roger Fisher, was installed. Since 1991 the organ has been in the care of David Wells of Liverpool.[4] The organ case is by Sir Gilbert Scott.

Manchester Cathedral

When I visited Manchester about 50 years ago (!) the organ appeared to be tweaked somewhere up in the choir...I don't remember exactly...but I think it was a Harrison. Now there is a magnificent instrument in a case on the screen by Kenneth Tickell. I think it is known as the Stoller organ, referring to the generous benefactor.

A superb instrument heard today mainly as a very effective accompaying intrument. Excellent trumpet in the Handel and final hymn.

The organ was the College's '750th birthday present to itself' in 2014 and replaced a rather unsatisfactory Walker instrument. One former organ scholar at Merton once voiced the suspicion to me that Merton might have got the Dobson at a discount because the firm wanted to build an organ in Europe, in order to get more business on this side of the pond!

The Bristol organ sounded excellent for accompanying....plenty to choose from. (Oddly I've never been to Bristol Cathedral nor heard its organ live.)

Keble College Chapel, Oxford

When we visited the Chapel, probably 25 years ago (?) to hear a concert given by Schola Cantorum, there was a big electronic beast in situ. Now there is a proper organ by Kenneth Tickell. It accompanied today's (pre-recorded) Choral Evensong with great aplomb. If anyone can post up details that would be great. For those who haven't seen the Chapel, it's brick-built, a product of the Oxford Movement, and it houses Holman Hunt's 'Light of the World'...which is quite tiny when seen in the flesh.

Edington Priory Wiltshire

When we first went to the Edington Festival, the services were accompanied by a fairly standard village church organ. Thanks to financial support from the Festival, a Harrison was installed, some years ago now.

I used to play this a lot in my schooldays - including for the Wrestling & Boxing evenings, earning a bit of pocket money plaing Fanfares to announce the fighters and light music in the intervals - Songs from the Shows! I don't remember the piston delays. Maybe it was OK in those days.

The organ heard on the broadcast was a Viscount Classical Organs regent 356.
