    R.I.P. A fine organist who wrote some useful and attractive scores. His inner imp came readily to the fore.

      I remember meeting him in the 1970's with one of my teachers (Caleb Jarvis) who was a good friend.

          I turned the pages for him once in the cathedral (up in the loft): a daunting prospect, but at least I had the pedal notes to be able to follow, and he usually gave me a nod.
          He was an expert at 'doodling' before services (I'm not sure that he'd call it improvising!), building up that great organ sound as the choir would process in, which in that great space took quite a while!
          And he always cheerily answered the door of his house when a group of us went carol singing: usually beaming at me, as he knew I'd given the right pitch for Ding dong!
          I shall dig out some recordings of his playing and his music to listen to later today.
