Pierre Pincemaille RIP

I understand that Pierre died very recently, info gleaned from Slipped Disc. If anyone ever asked me if I improvised, I do a little, I’d point them straight towards PP, to me the most proficient of them all.
I first came across him after his wonderfully entertaining demonstration at St Denis in this film -

It’s a tour de force of how to improvise tonally, rather than the usual Fauré-type washes or that vaguely modern French style most trot out. Worth watching for the sheer physical effort required to play Cavaillé Colls Opus 1.
He finishes with some hilarious comments about it all.

Thanks for that post Ferney. Great to see him at work. The short compass keyboard didn't seem to bother him!

For anyone interested the demonstration he gives at St Denis can be found on his Facebook page, not far down. It’s a rather poor audio sound but there’s a great fugue at around 12’35” , completely tonal and very convincing. Many attempt this but usually fall at around the third entry, not here! There’s also a superb Sortie in the closing minutes and make sure you hang on for his closing comments:)

He was a lovely man and very welcoming to visitors. I watched him play, 20 years ago now, smoking a cigarette whilst improvising a sortie. The ash got longer and longer before he jerked his head during the music, and the ash fell all over the keys... Didn't seem to put him off!
