    Muriel Murrill

Lovely moment on the Radio 3 Breakfast webpage earlier (now sadly corrected - wouldn't be at all surprised if one of you lot spoilt the fun by alerting them to the howler). The organ arrangement of Walton's Mint Imperial was cited as being by Muriel Herbert, rather than the Beeb's own Head of music in the early 50s, Herbert Murrill. Of course I realise Muriel was a formerly neglected composer in her own right, but the temporary error did fit rather well with Anglican Church Music's tradition of a penchant for polari: namely renaming church musicians with a moniker of the opposite sex (and, yes, most of us could but won't name several examples)...unless of course Prof. Murrill had an alias...

Other than the aforementioned, plus Howells, Brewer & Sumsion (mispronounced in the intro to Blackburn's CE broadcast last week, btw) are there many other CM Herberts?

That piece was one of my faves when a fanfare-ish ending to a service seemed appropriate...also having that Oh-So-British tune in the middle section makes it great for weddings. Why though did Herbert alter Walton's opening rhythmic figure? And why didn't OUP object? It should be semiquaver-qhaver-semiquaver...which is the way I always play it. Did Herbert think that organs couldn't repeat the note fast enough? Or that organists couldn't do it?

The only other piece I know by him is Murrill in E, still cropping up on cathedral music lists, but less frequently than 30 years ago.

Can't think of any other Herberts...apart from von Karajan, that is.

          ...and Henck, naturellement...

...although in a thread entitled Muriel Murrill it is perhaps somewhat susprising tht no one's yet mentioned Murail...

But are these Herberts "CM"s? (I don't know, as I'm presuming this means "Choir Master"?)

            Or "Church Musicians"??)

Well, three of them were conductors so I suppose that such activity might have crossed the paths of one or more of them at one time or another but I don't think that one could reasonably apply such a term to Herr Henck.

Is he the horn and trumpet-playing Steve Herbert who runs the brass and wind department at John Packer's in Taunton?

Is there more than one person whose parents didn't see the big picture? In this case I think there must be, because the SH of my childhood acquaintance would be well past retiring age! And he wasn't a brass player.

The Gloucester Herberts, surely - Brewer, Howells and Sumsion. Not to forget Howells's two school friends called Ivor (Gurney and Novello).
