So 'cat' is a bit like 'chai' as sort of root vocab that no matter what language it later appears in - Romance, Teutonic, Slav - retains its identity.

Reminder: the repeat of CE has moved to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Apologies for not posting a reminder last week.

Absolutely terrific to hear the Magnificat interpolated with carols as it historically was at Christmastime. I thought the choices very apt.

It's also perhaps worth remembering that Peterborough in a sense has no all-male choir as there is a mixed back row. And I thought the altos sounded especially fine.

Indeed. A point missed by one or two less well-informed posters, maybe? Presumably Mr Q knew all this when he took the job. What's not to like!!

A freshly imagined evensong using unhackneyed music that was performed in a decent fashion.

I try and catch CE via the repeat on a Sunday. It's sounding pretty good to this ordinary bums on seats less well informed as to girls punter!

Adjectival phras qualifying the noun 'punter'. Nice one.

Can you point me to an authoritative reference for this, please?

I believe the announcer said that it is a Lutheran tradition.

Something here, but not sure how authoritative http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=I...ificat&f=false

And of course John Tavener's Collegium Regale Magnificat includes interpolations from the Greek liturgy

Thanks, Mr Stoat. I should have remembered Bach's example (even if it's pushing things to call his interpolations carols). I confess I was rather hoping for some evidence from the British side of the channel that I might have missed.

"Seasonal texts" perhaps rather than carols?

Taking his inspiration from Bach, John Rutter deliberately adopts the tradition of troping a text in his choral work Magnificat.
