pardon me, is there a thread for today's archive St Paul's service ?
An archive broadcast from St Paul's Cathedral, first transmitted on Christmas Day 1988.

Am I the only one who listened? A good effort, I thought, and seriously good voluntary.

No, I tuned in, too, and echo your comments, F#minor. I'm not an admirer of Stanford's early canticles in A - like so many of his choral works the trebles and basses have all the proud notes whilst those allocated to the inner parts seem to have fallen on the staves like confetti. I was surprised at the fast pace selected for David Willcocks' arrangement of "Of the Father's Love Begotten", but here, as elsewhere, I was delighted by the accuracy and verve displayed by Tom Winpenny on the organ. The singing, too, was bright and lively, with good, muscular but controlled climaxes.

Hymns in broadcasts tend to be taken fast, as they are thought to be boring to listeners if they drag.

I liked the pace of that hymn. It can become a dreadful dirge. Anyway the speed of the final hymn is a useful adjuster if the broadcast is getting behind schedule.

I too enjoyed In dir ist Freude, one of the more exuberant chorale preludes. A personal preference is for the repeated pedal motif to stand out more, ideally using independent pedal stops including a 16' reed. There are always difficult decisions to be made over registration on a typical English parish church organ, because the available reed will probably blast through a tasteful Bachian pleno like a foghorn. I've no idea what instrument Tom W had to cope with.

Ah. One can often 'fake' a more gentle pedal 16' reed by coupling up the one on the Swell...but there ain't one here.
