The prime Norwegian TV station, NRK1, broadcasts a truly astonishing carol 'service' (but all singing, no readings or prayers) from Trondheim Cathedral, or Nidarosdomen as it is known, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Hope their i-player works in the UK.
There are two choirs involved, the cathedral's own Jentekor (girls' choir) and St Olaf's Choir, a student choir from Minnesota USA which visits every year. We are talking of world-class choirs here, superbly trained by talented directors. There are also brass and strings.
The sound from both choirs (sometimes singing together) is absolutely 'straight' and the tenors and basses blend perfectly.
The programme is mainly sung in English.
Most of the arrangements fall, I suppose, into the 'easy listening' category, so nothing to frighten the horses, but the whole thing is, impressively, sung from memory. And if you seek Joy at Christmas, this is where to get it!
