Far more than any number of Sainsbury's adverts or flashing lights in shopping centres, this really marks the beginning of the coming season for me.

Unfortunately, R3 will deny us the opportunity of hearing the second voluntary FĂȘte - Jean Langlais. More interesting than the endlessly repeated Wachet auf.

It marks the beginning of Advent for me...

... Christmas starts on December 25th (or maybe after work on December 24th)!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I was conscious of that when writing my comment - hence my use of the vague expression, "coming season".

Yes, I noticed that - I think we're basically in agreement on this point.

Advent is the time when even Tesco and Sainsbury's introduce piped music.

Stiil, there's always Waitrose and Booth's.

It's good to see that this service is being broadcast live this year. Last year's was a recording if I remember correctly.

Interesting to see if they use John's OWN installed very good recording / webcasting system, or do what they usually do i.e. fudge something.
I see that Stephen Shipley is named as producer.

It's good to see that descants from a previous regime are being used. There was a time, especially in another institution in the same city, where every new D of M seemed compelled to banish the work of his predecessor and introduce his own, often of inferior quality. Mr Nethsinga (apologies if he's Dr) doesn't seem to suffer from that complex.
