What remarkable posting resiliency. First a little sweeping up in front of the fruit and veg stand, then a mild rebuke (apron and cap, broom in hand), and finally, a warning on the way back into the shop with characteristic tilt and click of the head. And oh yes, almost forgot - 'and no one is going to tell me otherwise'
Oh no...Edward Higginbottom retiring

I've just gone back into the shop after a cooling off period and told the shopkeeper that I have changed my mind.
I've decided that New College should pay Peterborough compensation for pinching their organist of a couple of months after all.
I think a contribution towards the expensive re-building of their organ suggested by him, which many experts here think is a waste of money and which he will not now be around to play, would be a suitable goodwill gesture. They've got pots of money so a couple of hundred thousand quid should do nicely.
I've also decided that I should, in fact, point Mr Quinney in the right direction in his new job and not leave him to be entirely his own man.
I believe that he should, after all, follow his predecessor and be entrepreneurial as Edward Higginbottom advises in his blog.
Sales of CDs etc have fallen through the floor these days so he should give up the commercial side of the choir completely. However EH ( sorry Gabriel) also says in his blog that RQ ( sorry Gabriel) is a committed Christian so he should instead concentrate solely on the liturgical music in chapel.
He should use his obviously very strong powers of persuasion ( pace Peterborough ) to ensure that the chapel authorities provide the full range of choral services for the Christian year ( starting at Michaelmas and not at Advent ) not just the odd evensong now and again and use his excellent EH ( sorry Gabriel ) approved choir training skills to provide singing that will act as a strong evangelising force drawing thousands of undergraduates into the chapel to be converted to Christianity themselves and where they will spend millions in the gift shop.
Yes, that should do nicely, Oh, and also remember RQ ( sorry Gabriel) that Manners Makyth Man.

This could have changed, now that Commercial Manners Makyth Man.
The post of Assistant Organist at NCO is a relatively recent one, and since the present incumbent is heading north-east, I wonder whether Mr. Quinney will revert to working with organ scholars only, at least for the first 25 years of his tenure.

In the May/June issue of Choir and Organ magazine is a splendid appraisal of Edward H's 38 year reign at NCO. The author of the article, David Blackwell, tries to draw him out on the subject of girl choristers. EH declares himself a big supporter of girls' choirs, but goes on to say, "[Boys] can more easily put emotional life into singing when only among males".
I just thought I'd quote this to get everyone going.......
But the article is worth reading as an account of NCO's astonishing achievements in recording and concert-giving, in addition, of course, to their weekly work in the chapel which is characterised by a wide and at times unusual repertoire.
