Your Favourite English Anthem

Wash me Thoroughly from My Wickedness is my favourite SS Wesley, though never sang it as far as I can recall.

The whole charm of this piece to me is that it is not Wash me thoroughly but Wash me throughly. Thoroughly does not scan and does not fit the music.

I also love S.S. Wesley's Blessed be the God and Father - at least the treble solo Love one another with a pure heart fervently. Sentimental but beautiful.

Bleesed be the God and Father by SS Wesley is easily my favourite. Sang it in the school choir as a tenor and have loved it ever since. My late father and I were both very keen on Wesley, and I cannot hear any SSW without thinking of him (he died earlier this year). The words mean a lot to me too....

Come to think of it, that might be how Wesley got his nickname "Soapy Sam".

Yes, both of these are near the top of my list. Number one (today - ask me again tomorrow) would be Bainton's "And I saw a new heaven".

The words from Philippians Chapter 4 vv 4 to 7 along with verse 8 are my most favourite piece of Scripture.
