I'm sure that the 'over-loaded' current DoM was intended only in contrast with the earlier-mentioned former Assistant at Ely, Jeremy Filsell.......

.......whose canticles I relished - as, indeed, I did the whole service, especially for the conspicuous efforts of the choir.

Yes, I got that, decantor, but it just seems a curiously weighted choice of words, don't you think? Or was she just improvising - as KD does - and got in a bit of a twist as the clock ticked on?

Anyway.......it's of absolutely no consequence......let it go!

Yes, an excellent Evensong, and not just a new set of boys at the top of the choir, but an Assistant Organist only a few days into the job - bravo, Mr Aldhouse - lovely use of the instrument. Great to hear Jeremy Filsell's canticles, sadly not in the repertoire at Windsor presently - in case there are those who don't know, he was an alto layclerk of some distinction at St George's Windsor. He also wrote for us a fun Te Deum which gave more than a nod to Walton's Coronation Te Deum of 1953.

Agree absolutely with Finzi about Paul Trepte, doing a great job over the years.

Mr Filsell may also be paying homage to Sebastian Forbes as the Amen in this setting closely resembles the closing passage of the Aedis Christ I service. Nice addition to the repertoire.

Got to throw in my support for Magda - a perfect example of tune writing - 321 in NEH and by RVW himself.
The imaginative pairing with 'Saviour again ..' is typical of the attention to detail you get with every service at Ely.

Did anyone hear the late night Radio 4 Stephen Fry's English Delight prog on Mon: WTF....?
The history and culture of the four-letter word that starts with F.

Ely Friars are cited as the earliest English use of the F word in its sexual sense. Enjoy the link

They have a lot to answer for, those effing Friars.

I've been itching to suggest a limerick competition, maybe but not necessarily along the lines of:

There once was a Friar from Ely

On the other hand, one has to ask if The Choir is the best place for such profanities. Maybe there should be a LIMERICK thread on Platform 3 or somewhere, for those of us whose humour is still infantile.
