On the subject of the voluntary title: 'Year by year', along with 'week by week' and the like, are phrases I only ever hear in sermons. But they occur in about half of the sermons I hear! I wonder whether clergy realise this?

I find these 3 Choirs services a little odd because the combined forces are so much stronger than one choir would be on its own. I sensed that the BBC engineers were adjusting sound levels during the broadcast to cope with this. Will have to see how the Southern Cathedrals Festival broadcast comes over.

Just back from the Festival, so it was interesting to compare yesterday's broadcast with actually being there for the service. The only advantage to the radio version was that this time I could hear the precentrix - she was virtually inaudible from where I was sitting, at the back of the nave. (The cathedral was packed, of course.) Otherwise the real acoustic's bound to win, and it did! I specially enjoyed the Holst Nunc and the Rutter anthem, both of which I knew well beforehand, but the Part Magnificat was lovely too. The voluntary impressed at the start (extremely loud in situ) but became less interesting as it went on, I thought, - still, a privilege to be there.
