    Margaret Thatcher's Funeral

The order of service is here for anyone interested - and its live on BBC1.

    Choral music is
    William Croft - Burial Sentences
    Purcell - Hear my prayer
Brahms - How lovely is thy dwelling place
    Faure - In paradisum
Stanford - Nunc dimittis in G (as the recessional)

Elgar's 'Nimrod' is the first piece of organ music at the end.

Should be some choral treats with St Pauls choir, Carwood and Johnson.

So they are doing Croft's funeral sentences! I wonder how much of the music will be talked over.
    Any suggestions for suitable hymns?

No fan of the Lady -and I avoided any comment on the contentious threads- but I will save Nimrod, music dearest to me, for some other time.

I'm relieved to see that the much-stressed 'British composers' being played do not include Britten or Tippett, who I suspect would not only turn in their graves but probably rise up, appear in St Paul's and call "Stop!".

I shall try to watch the funeral, out of sheer curiosity.

the reports on the early morning rehearsal say that a band will play funeral marches by Beethoven, Chopin and Mendelssohn - I can't think what that Mendelssohn would be.
I find something strangely poignant about the sound of a muffled bell

If I get there, I'll find a CCTV/OB camera & wave my best cap at it, Mary. It's a rather striking maroon job

                      Probably this?

Barenboim, plays, Mendelssohn, Songs, Without, Words, Op, 62, no, 3, in, E, flat, Minor, Funeral, March

But it's of no consequence to me. On Wednesday, I shall be attending a funeral. Not hers.

Yo could try taking aim and letting go, Ams!

When I suggested to my ex that I might just go along, she replied, "Don't do it, please! - You're too old now for getting yourself into trouble!"

It would appear Hymns are to be:
He who would valiant be (Monks Gate, RVW)
Love Divine, all loves excelling (Blaenwern, descant by Scott)
I vow to thee my county (Thaxsted)

As to organ music before Service it is:
Meditation on John Keble’s Rogationtide (Ireland)
                            Psalm-Prelude: (2, 11 (Howells)
Allegro and Andante from Op.28 (Elgar)
Adagio from 3 pieces for organ (Bridge)
                            Fantasia & Toccata Op.57 (Stanford)
                            Master Tallis’s Testament (Howells)
Toccata & Fugue The Wanderer (Parry)
                            Rhosymedre (RVW)
                            Elegy (Parry)
After Service will also be:BWV 546 (Bach)
And the Ode is Intimations of Immortality (Wordsworth)

Shame, for those who might watch, that all the organ music will be talked over.

It's a shame that the orders of service at St Paul's (and Westminster Abbey for that matter) look so low-rent. All that Times New Roman - yuck.
