    Psalmathon

Can I just draw the attention of regular readers of this board to the 'Psalmathon' taking place at Lichfield Cathedral this coming weekend - see http://lichfield-cathedral.org/20101...ral-psalmathon. Lovers of Anglican chant should be interested, and it'll surely be good to hear some old favourites (Allegri etc.) together with lesser known contributions from Vann and Stanford, amongst others. All in a very good cause - trying to keep the stunning East End Lady Chapel standing and glazed with its medieval Flemish glass. Doubtless they'd be glad of any extra sponsorship if anyone has anything down the back of the sofa!

Best wishes to all those participating.

    Is this it?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

What a great idea from Lichfield - they deserve every success. But it's a lot of effort for just £2000 (they're half way there already). Can so little really save the East End Chapel and its glass? Is this just part of an ongoing appeal?

The total estimated cost is £800 000. The £2000 seems to be just a target for the Psalmathon.

£2000 is the target for online fundraising for this event. It's part of various fundraising events the Cathedral Music Department have been staffing to 'do their bit' to try and save the extremely fragile East End and its glass. Fingers crossed for the rest by Saturday night!

Lichfield have reached their online target - 101% in fact. Clearly the total was bolstered by some hefty contributions from anonymous donors: is this a mark of the Big Society?

Not so long ago the (recently departed) organist of Lichfield, Philip Scriven, did a 24-hour play-a-thon. That may also have been in aid of that fund. Not sure how he managed for food and comfort-breaks...

In fact, the 'organathon' was shared between the cathedral organists Phil, Cathy and Martyn, as well as the headmaster of the Cathedral School and the Honorary Asst Organist, Nigel Argust. It was also in aid of saving the East End. Although the nominal target for this event has been reached, it still leaves about £800,000 to be found before the restoration is secure! So let's hope the psalms might provoke still more generosity before it's all over...

                  How did the Psalmathon go?

We've had no news of it since the date reminder.
