I'm glad one of the 'smaller' places still has a CE slot. Pity we no longer have Leicester, Christchurch Priory, Chelmsford and others I can't think of at the moment.

        Christ Church, Oxford is 'smaller'.

Well done to the opening soloist, scary moment dealt with admirably.

I'm sure Chelmsford will be back with Mr Davey at the helm. A former Portsmouth organ scholar I believe. One of many talented musicians to have gone through 'The Cathedral of the Sea'

Indeed; I believe Mr. Davey is building on the excellent work started by Mr. Nardone as he continues his career at a 'larger' place. In fact Mr. Nardone's predecessor was Mr. Lucas, formerly DoM of the afore mentioned 'Cathedral of the Sea'.

Fun trivia time, gang! Which is the only cathedral that can be spotted from the sea?

Chichester , apart from in 1861 when the spire collapsed!

So it must've been 'smaller' in 1861?

Back to the matter at hand. Has the Schutz ever been broadcast before?

Yes, also I don't think the west end was a deep as it is today.

                        Ans: St Magnus, Kirkwall.

                        Portsmouth:
Robust, honest singing, and an amazingly ambitious undertaking for this cathedral in terms of the Schutz Seven Words and in German, particularly using that number of different soloists. Certainly echo the earlier comment about the terrifying start for any alto.

I wonder how close this would be to the numbers / sound / voice balance originally envisaged by Heinrich Schutz?

Portsmouth did not pretend to be bel canto, and, yes, there were intonation problems, BUT all that said, I found it fascinating and engaging, particularly as the range of voices types within each standard voice part chosen was so distinct. Voices all sounded pretty young too, but good in that the whole choir sounded pretty young. No shirking of the challenges, and the narrative line emerged well.

I haven't heard this yet, but from what I recall they did pretty well last time out. And, maybe three or four years back IIRC, we all thought they gave us a really splendid broadcast.

Also, I think they came out top in my little website survey - I think it's time to do that again, to see if anything has changed around the country!

Management: is there an easy way to search for that particular post, please? Cheers.

That surprises me. Given that Liverpool Cathedral can be seen from what must be 40 odd miles away on the hill near Hayfield, I would have thought you could have glimpsed the tower from the mouth of the Mersey. But I haven't sailed those waters so I wouldn't like to insist.

I'll put a claim in for St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee, which is certainly visible from the Firth of Tay.
