The Choir - Sunday March 10th

Mary King - Europe's Choral Folk Traditions
Mary King explores the links between folk and choral music.

    Should be interesting.

Well, that was a model programme, IMO. Mary King had a succinct presenting style (no self-promotion) and there was plenty of music played.

It was good to hear some choirs out of the usual mould...in particular the East European choirs with straight, well-blending tenors and basses .

Talking of self-effacing, we have Whitaker next week.

Hear, hear! I would add only that the music itself was a delight - folksong reshaped by master-musicians, retaining its seminal immediacy but teasing the ear with pepper and spice (as 'twere). High-class easy listening, I'd say.

Whitacre does acknowledge his choral roots: I see no reason to despair at this early stage.

        Absolutely spot on.

I listened to some of this, and I couldn't agree more.

Following on from John Eliot G yesterday afternoon, plus the two Early Music Shows, there's been some fine listening on R3 this weekend
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
