Andrew Stewart has written an article about the BBCS in the current issue of Choir and Organ. The piece is naturally in praise of the instituion but it does say:
"Even the group's critics, particularly those tested by choral vibrato and big individual voices [who can they be talking about?] must surely acknowledge the BBC Singers' unique contribution to today's choral scene."
The article focuses on the BBCS' outreach programme, especially its work in schools in the London Boroughs of Hammersmith, Fulham, Westminster, Ealing and Harrow and involving kids "from low income families, many eligible for free schoolmeals". This is an aspect of the BBC's work I did not know about (Reithian on the ground if not on air) and whilst it does not extend to running a maitrise as does Radio France, it must surely be applauded.
