So did I - they played it with their adaptation of Masefield's The Box of Delights, didn't they? A magical book!

      My three Christmas essentials are:

      Hely-Hutchinson Carol Sym
James Galway's Christmas Carol - favourite track being Shepherd's Pipe Carol
Harry Mortimer's All Stars playing Christian's Awake (from an old Music for Pleaure LP)

I also like from the Halle Christmas CD - Cowboy Carol.

Can't explain why this Louvin Brothers song, which I first heard on a bootleg LP in the '80's, gets to me.
And completely by chance yesterday, accidentally engineered by Globaltruth of this parish, it ended up in the tweet lap of singer, Shan Cothi. It grabbed her too.

Catalan carol, El Noy de la Mare - here's Segovia playing the Llobet guitar transcription:

and here's Arianna Savall singing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKW5wUHAVMQ

            The words are:

What shall we give to the Child of the Virgin
What will we give him that he will enjoy?
Raisins and figs, and walnuts and olives,
Raisins and figs and honey and curds

Pearsall's hot-head setting of 'In Dulci Jubilo' is huge fun to sing, and I always enjoy hearing Daquin's lovely Noels for organ.

No. 1 for me is Boris Ord's Adam Lay Ybounden. Would that I could write something so simple and yet so beautiful.

Half a dozen that instantly come to mind (with many others close behind)...

Pierre Villette: Hymne a la Vierge
                    Francis Poulenc: Videntes Stellam
Elizabeth Poston: Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
                    Peter Warlock: Bethlehem Down
Herbert Howells: Here is the Little Door
Benjamin Britten: A New Year Carol*

*...yes, our trebles sing it at Christmas!

The German composers vied with each other to produce the most spectacular arrangements - I love this one:

A version of In dulci jubilo, composed by Samuel Scheidt, performed by the Cambridge Singers, conducted by John Rutter.

                      And this:

Michael Praetorius (c. 1551-1621): In dulci jubilo (a 16), Pars I & IITaverner Consort, Choir & PlayersAndrew Parrott, directorRose windows in Erfurt, Freib...

But I also love the gentle introspective lullaby by Buxtehude:

For me, the great glory of Christmas is that there is so much good music that you could probably fill the Kings Carol Service three times over! Choir wise, my favourite time of year, and I try to immerse myself in as much music as possible.

In terms of carols which everyone joins in with, I enjoy the standards (O come, all ye faithful, Hark the herald etc) but for one which is particularly underrated I'd go for Of the Father's heart begotten.

In terms of choir pieces, the list is truly endless...but if I had to pick one piece which for me sums up Christmas it would be Morten Lauridsen's O magnum mysterium - historic words and shimmeringly beautiful music.

I don't know about favourites but 'World Music' now has a list of nearly 1000 Christmas tracks on Spotify of various kinds.

Among the ones I have picked out in the past three days are Britten - A New Year's Carol; Ramirez - Navidad Nuestra; a Senagalese choir singing "O Ndim Le In (Noel) "; and from the CD "Noels du Monde", a choral piece, "Petra'zo a Nevez (Noel Gallois)". We also have Grainger's "The Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol" and quite a lot of church music from Eastern Europe.

My favourite carols are probably "Once in Royal David's City" and "Silent Night" - fairly predictable.
