I hope the thoroughly unprofessional violinist pictured in the item linked to below now feels as ashamed of himself as he rightly should:

I can think of a few conductors of yesteryear who would have bawled him out for far less. Surprising that none of his colleagues reacted either.

Very sad news indeed: Jonathan Harvey's music was quite wonderful, especially the electronic stuff. In fact this composer changed my life: I was present for the world premiere of 'Madonna of Winter and Spring' at the Proms in 1986 coupled with Messiaen' Poemes pour Mi, and the London premiere of 'Earth Dances' by Harrison Birtwistle: quite an event and I have been a card carrying contemporary music freak ever since! When 'Madonna' was done again at the Albert Hall with Jonathan in charge at a desk of electronics a few years later, I managed to get his autograph and had a brief chat with him about his music. A very great man, and will be sadly missed.

It was played at a Southern Cathedrals' Festival concert in Winchester in the 80s; I was there.

This is the kind of posting that restores some of my optimism - thank you, CD.

Sad news about Jonathan Harvey. Too many composers have passed away this year. He will be sadly missed.

I have him on cassette talking about his works Tombeau de Messian and Other Prescences and the works themselves.
This tape has been played quite a few times. He says on the tape " I dont know why todays composers are not more excited about new techniques now available! "

Also heard his Mortuos Plango on Discovering Music.

I am no fan of the Breakfast programme normally, but well done whoever chose to close this morning's edition with Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco (something I only discovered when I chose to access today's Essential Classics via the iPlayer - the end of the Harvey piece precedes the start of Essential Classics there). I then checked the playlist of Breakfast to discover that they also included his The Angels earlier on in the programme.
