This is being screened again. It is in many ways an unexpectedly good programme having much to offer the 'average interested viewer' and the cognoscenti. Much as I dislike, generally speaking, the presenter-led format (especially where the said presenter is teleported within seconds to locations hundreds of miles apart) Simon Russell Beale redeems the whole thing with his quiet and knowledgeable persona. And we have Harry and The Sixteen.
But is this not a bit of a cop-out for BBC4? Their 'Friday-night-is-music-night' slot cries out for live or at least specially recorded concerts. Grateful as we are for live music on R3, there is a shameful lack of televised classical music. If the Beeb has any Reithian values left, couldn't we have some...please?
