if D/E/C# mean D minor at bar 3 I don't see why they don't mean D minor at bar 8 - what key are we in at bar 8 ?

I now understand what you meant by "Tippett .. gives the treble soloist as much help as possible" - only with his first note and not thereafter

if you're telling me a scale of D minor does contain A flat, I've been under a misapprehension - apologies

Yes; the emphasis today seems to be on small vocal ensembles such as Exaudi and the Neue Vocalisten Stuttgart - and James Weeks (who founded Exaudi) continues the astonishing work begun by James Wood with the New London Chamber Choir.

Does the London Sinfonietta Choir still exist? Clive Wearing got tremendous performances from them at around the same time as the John Alldis Choir.

You are certainly under a misapprehension in that you think C has no place in a scale of D minor.

I expect my confusion arose when you told me that D/E/C# [bar 3] was still clearly D minor

yes I know there are melodic and harmonic minor scales

This seems to have spun out bizarrely into a separate, duplicate thread... I thought I was suddenly seeing double just now on the 'What's New?' page... and I haven't touched a drop today...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                It's of minor importance, Cal.

It's "The Choir" Board, Alpie - think of it as counterpoint!

You're clearly feeling sharp today, S_A... whereas I feel unaccountably a little flat...

It's also compliant with quantum physics that the same thing can be going on in two different places simultaneously.
