    Advent Service from St John's: 2 December, 4pm

    Looking forward to this - it's the cue to start on the Christmas cards, get the foreign ones all written, at least, for early sending... Shall make sure to be in and get scribbling after 'Veni Emmanuel'... What a great tune that is (and the Ord 'Adam' to follow ). Not so sure about the rest...

    Love the Wishart...a great piece. Glad they're doing the Ledger...a fine tribute. And yes Veni Emmanuel is wonderful. Have you heard it on the St Paul's Advent CD (John Scott) arranged by Andrew Carter? It's tremendous.

      Recorded eh? I'd always thought this was broadcast live on Advent Sunday, but apparently the Service is being recorded tomorrow night http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/advent-carol-service-2012. Advent Sunday is December 2, the day of the broadcast.

        I had to look that up... The last few have been in late November, I think.

          Yes they have, I feel sure, been broadcast live on Advent Sunday and I thought that this was tomorrow until I also looked it up.

            That's put me on something of a downer. A service recorded eight days before Advent Sunday
            is simply not within the tradition of this particular occasion.

            Caliban: Do I suspect you don't how to calculate the date of Advent Sunday ??

              I suspect you do suspect that! It would have been a well-founded suspicion until a couple of hours ago, when I learnt that it's the nearest Sunday to St Andrew's Day, 30th November... Is that right?

                Yes, it may still be easier to think of it being the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day.

                This can quite often be in December as is the case this year (and next). Btw,

                  Yes I knew the 'fourth Sunday' version - it's just I've been surprised over the last few years how early AS seemed to fall, and like Petrushka assumed without really thinking about it that it would be tomorrow.

                    Last year Christmas Day was a Sunday - I think- so the last Sunday in Advent would have been 18 December then pushing back

                    (or is that forward?) Advent Sunday to 27 November which must be the earliest possible date it could be.

                      Do I take it that my normal way of listing for that particular broadcast is now redundant? To make it a bit easier on the eye, I don't usually set it out the way Caliban has. But if what's already listed upthread is Ok, I won't bother.

                        Oh sorry, I didn't know you had a normal way...! I just noticed the listing on the R3 schedule and copied and pasted. The line spacing isn't ideal, I agree. If you have a more readily-legible source, feel free. (Or copy it into a PM and I can amend my post!)... Didn't mean to tread on toes!

                          It is very sad that it isn't live. I guess it's to do with short Oxbridge terms. One might have hoped that the responsibility attached to being a famed choral institution might have extended to being present for Advent Sunday. I may have got this all wrong of course. Can anyone definitively say which Advent broadcasts in recent years have been live and which recorded; and if recorded, for what reason?

                            Certainly for Advent Sunday 2011, one reads in the R3 schedule:

                              I recall the service being recorded the day before on a handful of occasions but the recent trend has been to restore the live transmissions.
                              If I may say so the postings of Caliban and Petrushka on this thread are proof enough of the outreach of this service.
                              A bad start to Advent indeed!
