Wouldn't it be fun if they used Hatherop Castle instead of Wolvercote?

Those words also fit to the theme tune from the Muppets, of course.

I've never been to Ripon Cathedral but I recall many years ago our choirmaster telling us young lads about the hand on the wall beating time. For some reason this always fascinated me. Still there I presume?

Apropos of nothing, but by a strange coincidence I was yesterday chatting to a university friend who lives in Coln St. Aldwyn, a mile or so from Hatherop Castle.

The church at the castle, now a school, has a beautiful modern waterspout on the south side of the east end. The original lead and stone gargoyle must have failed and a new version installed that is a coloured metal dragon supported by a chain. It is most striking and effective. A quick internet search found this...

When I saw it last year it was cleaner than in the photograph above and must have been repainted.

The organ in the church of St Nicholas is a lovely 2 M+P adorned with several dire warnings about the dangers of fire and that it must be isolated at the main switch before being left. It is also notable for having a later addition in the form of a 16p pedal Open Wood the pipes of which are painted to match the walls and appear to be placed in umbrella stands on either side of the chancel. They sound good though...

As I wrote, apropos of nothing...

Yes. Or was two months ago.

The hand is in the centre of the carved woodwork of the east side of the organ screen, above the arch - presumably, in the position of the original console. As the cathedral's website says about the organ, "...the organ case at Ripon was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott. One particularly unusual feature of it is a unique, carved wooden hand. This used to be used to conduct the choir, via a lever at the organ console. It was added to the case in 1695, when a rebuild of the organ then meant that the organist had to move to a new seat from where he could not conduct the choir himself."

For curiosity's sake, I have operated the hand myself from the organ loft when I played for a visiting choir there decades ago. For obvious reasons, it is quite unable to convey any direction of expression.

Shame. You'd have thought that they'd have fixed it so that you could at least waggle the fingers a bit.

I think you'll find Philip Moore is one 'l' of a composer, Dracco.

[a] I cut and paste from the R3's website. They do make mistakes occasionally, and sometimes I do not have time to check via internet every name on the service list.
                      [b] Draco, not Dracco.

I think that was the point.

Yes. A bit like Stewart as opposed to Stuart, for example.
