So Handel and Haydn are no real surprise. Great composers always will rise to the top. Simon has kept his list guarded for now but I would guess there might be some others there although apart from the odd motet taken out of context I doubt that Bach figures. Britten CoC, RVW Antiphon are probably the only 20th Century offerings [Hadley- My beloved spake a possible exception].

What might favour a top ten piece? They have to be a good sing, nice contrasts, exciting (prospect of everything going tits-up), it helps double choir pieces I think because of natural competition between Dec and Can.

"A yawn" for the back rows? Whilst as Trif says it may well be more fun for the trebles, it's certainly not that.

Anyway, back to the trebles, thanks for the post and very much for the links, Chris. I'm sure I speak for all of us in that. For obvious reasons it would be inappropriate to provide the full list we did then - in any case it's only a snapshot of one set of trebles at one time at one foundation. Though it would be interesting to do a similar exercise now, if anyone would like to ask their front rows?

But as you and others have mused, the reasons for the pleasure in certain pieces will in many cases be the same: boys will like them for the excitement, the drama, the musical tension, the competition if double choir - and, I'm certain, largely because of the chance to show off.

But the pieces aren't all Sturm und Drang: there are a couple of calmer works there, which I suspect were chosen because even as 10 - 14 year olds, we could recognise the most sublimely moving music when we heard it.

However, you've got two on your list the same as we did!

As previously disclosed I first sang at an entirely secular school - a mere grammar school: remember those? Never sang in a choir as a treble, and unfortunately had zero music lessons between the ages of 10 and 16 or so. Our choir managed decent enough performances of the emboldened ones to sing for admission money in Romsey Abbey as well as at school concerts. I managed to add the underlined ones when singing some approximation to the bass parts in an Oxford chapel choir - no, not one with a recording contract So all in all I don't think I've done too badly.

Personal favourite? Might just be the Harris, but that might have had something to do with the line "In full Enjoyment of Felicity". Well, it was the time of a certain Ms Kendal's stardom in The Good Life
