Please may I offer some rarely done M and G's which deserve more limelight? Perhaps other members might add... or not....?
How about Statham in E minor or/and Walford Davies Festal Service?
Or Rogers Sharp Service?
Any ideas?

If Walford Davies' Festal Service is the same as Walford Davies in G, then I have discovered it, and it's not a gem, it's pretty blooming awful. Can't say I get very excited about Statham in E minor either.

I do generally hold the opinion that if something is well-known and loved there are usually good reasons for it, and the same probably applies to the mainstream Evensong settings.

Taking Howells an example, he wrote something like 20 settings. Most Cathedral choirs will sing Gloucester, Coll Reg and St Pauls because they are undoubtedly his three best settings (in that order for me, doubtless others will disagree on that). That said, the Westminster we heard at Derby last week has its moments, as do the G and B minor settings. Lots of people rate the New College setting too, although I've yet to 'get' that one.

The neighbouring 'sumptuous' thread listed lots of settings I didn't know, which surprised me. However, I fear there is probably a good reason for that and that I'd probably prefer them to remain 'undiscovered'! If GJ thinks Brewer in D is bad, there is surely much worse! (He should see the piece of Maunder our choir at Beeston will be singing for Harvest - atrocious music, but rather good fun, and the congregation will love it...again!)

If we're happily accepting tongue-in-cheek suggestions, then I go with Madden in D (ATB setting). This may be peculiar to Winchester but it's worth hearing for the nunc which is exactly what one would expect a cowboy's evensong to sound like. I suppose that would be an OK corral evensong!
