    The Cardinall's Musick / Carwood Monday, 5th March 7.30 p.m

The Cardinall's Musick, directed by Andrew Carwood

    Byrd: The Englishman

Settings of words from the 1559 Book of Common Prayer appear to date from his time as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral in the 1560s.
The Great Service, written after he joined the Chapel Royal, stands as a masterpiece of Anglican music, an ornament of the first Elizabethan age.

    The Cardinall's Musick
    Andrew Carwood, director

    Byrd:
    Venite from The Great Service
O Lord make thy servant Elizabeth our Queen
    Te Deum The Great Service
Prevent us, O Lord; Benedictus from The Great Service
Praise our Lord, all ye Gentiles

Good as this was Draco, the top line vibrato began to grate after a while.

Coincidentally, St T NYC have a Byrd fest for Choral Eucharist on 4th March. Just listening to it on WMP.

Agree CJS. As I listened to the hard-driven sound the Cardinall's Musick favours, I began to understand why St Paul's boys sound they way they do.

Incidentally, ref St Paul's CE, and St T NYC, the latter have a Tippett St John's Cambridge service available as a webcast from last Sunday's evensong - and it makes VERY different hearing as well.
