    John Gardner CBE 1917 - 2011

The composer and teacher John Gardner, who is probably best known for the carol Tomorrow shall be my dancing day written for St Paul's Girls' School (where he was Director of Music from 1962-1975, succeeding Herbert Howells), has died at the age of 94. http://www.johnlintongardner.co.uk/index.htm

I must be wrong but didn't Holst [also associated with St Paul's Girls' School] publish a version of this, together with 'Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day'?

Anyway, RIP John Gardner. A good long life.

Thanks, Roehre, for drawing my attention to that.

Despite what Wikipedia says, I have never seen an arrangement by Holst of Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day in any catalogue of his works, nor is it mentioned in his biography (Michael Short 1990 OUP) in front of me.

Holst set the full text of the carol under the title 'This have I done for my true love'.

Imogen's Catalogue mentions this as opus 34 no.1 H.128, dating from 1916, published by Augener 1919.

We sang it when I was in our school choir in 1963.

I can't put my hand on it immediately, but I'm sure St John's Cambridge recorded this under David Hill on a CD 'Christmas at St John's'

Third CD down has the track you're after... It is an excellent, fast paced setting with (unsurprisingly) a rather folksong-esque sound world to the melody.

I now remember that Holst, who was friendly with Conrad Noel, the Red Vicar of Thaxted, arranged a dance [or got someone else to], to this music which was performed in Thaxted Church.
