      No THAT'S what you call a proper choral evensong service list!

      Unmissable. And if the choir's on form, possibly in line for the best of the year.

        Haven't heard Winchester on site since... perhaps 2002?... but this could be a helluva show. Chichester last May did Stanford in A ... it was wonderful.

          The service was sung by the combined choirs at SCF.

          Since Salisbury and Chichester sang individual CEs last academic year I think it is unfortunate that we won't hear Winchester on their own.

          I hoped to make up for it by hearing them at St Albans IOF in July but, like the home team, they got lumbered with some 17th century pieces to sing on their own and which, in the case of both choirs, though very well sung were not the sort of repertoire to show up either choir at their very best.

          The service music here would have been ideal for Winchester on their own but it will still be just as much of a treat sung by all three choirs.

              Just back from France this evening so can comment... I was there on the day and it was a huge and mighty sound! I almost have a slight concern that it might even have been too big for the engineers! I shan't be able to hear this on Wed - the Cathedral Annual Meeting that afternoon means that the earlier start time means I've no chance! Hoping a friend might be able to record for me and I'll try to LA.

                No problem there, Lizzie. Radio 3 doesn't employ engineers any more.

                  I think St Michael's in Southampton has an offering on Michaelmas Day - evensong, I believe.

                        You probably can't win if you're a sound engineer. Draco complained [St Matthew's, Nothampton] that the level of the announcer was too high and yet the recorded music was too low. Had the music started off at the high level, a big compression would have been needed when the mighty Wurlitzer kicked in at full throttle. And none of us like these sudden artificial cut-backs. As I understand it the amplitude response of the human ear is very sophisticated...i.e. we can tolerate a wide range of volume. The same does not appear to apply to microphones or speakers.

                        Agreed, some broadcasts seem to be done better than others. But as I said before, I'd much rather have LIVE CE broadcasts, warts and all. than for the Beeb to pack it in because too many of us complain about the sound engineering.

                            Totally agree. It was just that I was a distance from speakers at the very start and for one moment I thought we'd had an Ultima Thule power cut and had to rush in to turn it up, and, then as you say, when the organ bared its teeth, I was hanging on to the doorhandle to avoid being swept away.
