Calm down! Many of us on this thread are really interested in the appointment at St Thomas.. Don't let's descend into the silly bickering for which The Choir is sadly known.

I think the motto ne vile velis (if I've got my Latin right) might be a good one to adopt.

A fantastic appointment IMHO. I've known Dan for some time. A superb musician and organist, but also a good trainer of boys. When he was at Jesus College Cambridge I often thought his boys made a better, brighter and more natural sound than the more famous boy choirs across town.

Well, if you wish to hear St T's in NYC live THIS week, please remember that since the USA put clocks forward today, we are now only FOUR hrs ahead, so their CE is at 9.30 p.m. our time until next Sunday, 27th when our clocks spring forward.

After that it is the usual 5hr difference.

Incidentally, it's John Scott's memorial service at St Paul's tomorrow.

The exquisite Libera nos, salva nos,/ John Sheppard is part of the Eucharist at St T's this coming Sunday.
Short, seven voices, nowhere to hide for trebles.

The Grier Mass is startling, ambitious and very well sung. The Sheppard heart-stopping.

Do listen online if you can.

I fear St T's has done something inexplicable with the sound balance. It used to be a model.
Dan Hyde now has all psalms unaccompanied - good. The repertoire is terrific, the singing top class.
                  BUT,
and I fear it's very sadly quite a big but...............
...................the choir now sounds sufficiently distant for the fine acoustic to virtually swallow them. And when the men sing out or the organ plays even moderately, the boys are virtually lost unless they are at full throttle and in a high register. In a recent Morley canticle there were two treble solos and frankly I could not hear one of them - now an all too regular situation.

Evensong hangs on the wall of English life like an old, familiar cloak passed through […]

                  Sung on March 9th.
Tertius Noble canticles, Byrd and - ahem - Rutter. The organ is quiet but the choir sounds about 100 metres away.

I have registered surprise and frustration.

                    Blimey. Was it Stanford's birthday?
