Oh that my Latin had not stopped at O-level.

It's no harder than O-level, ardcarp

Agreed. I've got it all so far, but for the staggeringly witty rejoinder I would have liked to compose in that learned tongue, I'm au bout de mon latin

Not always easy, ardcarp. For difficile est quae acceperis nisi exerceas tenere. as Pliny junior said. And how true!!

Edit. No he didn't! Lol. I checked the authorship cos I wasn't 100% sure and found I'd misremembered the quote. "Tenere" should be the third word.

I am afraid my Latin scholarship is limited to a year's study in the second form and some miserable marks in the end of year exam.

...that will doubtless be down to the large quantities of ale quaffed in the interim, if you are anything like the rest of us church music junkies.

I just want to die when I hear it done (for instance) by the BBC Singers.
I couldn't help wondering if ardcarp indulged in a little domestic self-flagellation by listening to Afternoon on 3 last Monday. The BBC National Chorus of Wales gave us Cecilia, and the above passage, taken at a cracking pace, was rendered by a feisty soprano who added liberal vibrato to some crotchets and all notes longer. The effect was rather like "O fear night's hoodies, arrogant as crows". And if ardcarp did listen, I trust he responded well to defibrillation.

(Ironically, the choristers of the Three Choirs' cathedrals were present at the concert, contributing to Adams' Transmigration - a moving piece if imv five minutes longer than it need be.)
