Liz Truss is in my view confirmation of rather than counterexample to the generalisation that Merton doesn't do politics.
As to her not being MA, this could be a) Wikipedia not knowing that she'd taken her MA b) her not having bothered to collect the degree (many don't, although in my time at least the fee for doing so was nominal. I was a PhD student at the time and would have noticed if not!)

It's worth noting that a lot of Merton choir aren't students at the College. I believe it may be the only Oxbridge choral foundation that routinely offers entrance choral awards to students at other Colleges - a consequence of wanting very high standards both academically and musically. This is tolerated because the rivalry between choirs across the colleges (the mixed-voice choirs at least) is less intense at Oxford than in Cambridge.

We didn't need quite so much about the history of Merton, or what the readings were going to be about.

I'll be interested to see what happens the next time York broadcasts.
The times I've been since moving here there's been an introduction and welcome to the audience before the red light goes on, with a few 'instructions', but little else once the service has got going, iirc.

      Good to hear the Rorem.
I'm hoping our choir director includes it in a planned Quaker-based concert we're planning next March.
It's a BBC policy that the readings etc. should have a short introduction to help explain what they're about. I wouldn't be keen if it happened everyday, but I think when it's on national radio, if that helps to make it slightly more inclusive then it seems sensible.

I guess we get them in the Nine Lessons and Carols, so I take your point about their potential usefulness.
