This incredible artist has died aged 81.
I have followed his career since he gave concerts with David Munrow's Early Music Consort. Whilst Alfred Deller can be thought of as a pioneer of the 20th century use of the counter-tenor voice, James, for many, reached the pinnacle in his flexibility and expressiveness. His role as Oberon in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream illustrates the point well. In person, he was a lovely man and not at all boastful about his abilities.
